In Hawkins, Indiana, year 1983, four boys were playing D&D. Will, Dustin, Mike and Lucas were heading home on their bikes. Will was biking on Mirkwood, near Hawkins Lab when he crashed into the forest and suddenly disappeared. The next day, his brother and mom find out about his disappearence and starts frantically searching for him. Joyce, Will's mother, and Jonathan, Will's brother, put up signs in search of him and talk to the Chief of Police, Jim Hopper. Meanwhile, a mysterious girl appears in a restuarant and is caught by the owner while eating his food. The owner, Benny, feeds the girl and calls social services. A woman comes claiming that she is from social services who is actually from Hawkins Lab and shoots Benny. The girl gets agitated and kills 2 scientists with her telekinesis trying to get away from the people who do tests on her. Meanwhile, Dustin, Mike, and Lucas are searching for their missing friend, (Will) but find the girl hiding in the bushes instead. At Will's house, Joyce gets a phone call and hears Will's breathing. The phone call gets static, the lights flicker and the phone zaps Joyce.
